A central venous port system is used when a patient needs long courses of chemotherapy and the peripheral veins are poorly visible. Chemotherapy drugs that are toxic to the vascular endothelium can burn the peripheral veins, leading to complications such as phlebitis and thrombophlebitis. If a chemotherapy drug gets into the subcutaneous tissue, soft tissue necrosis develops.
💉 An implanted port helps avoid these complications: the chemotherapy drug is delivered into the large bloodstream of the lower half of the body, where it is quickly diluted by the blood, which reduces its local toxic effect on the vessels.
🌟 The modern central venous ports used at the Sumy Regional Clinical Oncology Center are of high quality. The port is placed under the skin in any convenient area of the body, usually below the collarbone. The port is accessed with a special Huber needle, which reduces the risk of complications. The port membrane can withstand up to 10,000 punctures, so the system can be used for a long time — up to 7 years.
Our center uses reliable French systems for central venous port implantation, providing patients with safe and effective treatment. We care about your health and comfort while you go through complex treatment.
