Mediastinoscopy

Mediastinoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows the doctor to examine the organs of the mediastinum (the space between the lungs) from the inside and obtain tissue samples for detailed examination. The procedure is performed with special endoscopic equipment through a small incision in the suprasternal area, just above the breastbone.

This procedure makes it possible to:

🔹 assess the mediastinal lymph nodes;

🔹 confirm or rule out cancer (for example, lung cancer, lymphoma, etc.);

🔹 determine the stage of the disease;

🔹 choose the right treatment strategy (for example, decide whether surgery or chemotherapy is appropriate)

Mediastinoscopy is the “gold standard” when other imaging methods (CT, PET-CT) do not provide a clear diagnosis.

The operation was performed by Oleksandr Vynnychenko, a doctor of the thoracic oncology department. He was assisted by Ihor Vynnychenko.

👨‍⚕️ The thoracic oncology department of the Sumy Regional Clinical Oncology Center specializes in the surgical treatment of tumors of the chest organs and of head and neck tumors, including ENT cancers. The department performs surgery for tumors of the lungs, pleura, mediastinum, chest wall and other anatomical structures in this area. It also performs minimally invasive diagnostic procedures, including mediastinoscopy, video-assisted thoracoscopy and biopsies.

The department actively uses modern approaches to preoperative diagnosis, postoperative rehabilitation and comprehensive patient treatment. Thanks to its technical equipment and multidisciplinary approach, patients receive the full range of highly specialized medical care in line with current oncology protocols.
