On World Cancer Day, 4 February, an important briefing was held with the participation of the Sumy Regional Clinical Oncology Center. The event brought together leading specialists of the region, including Volodymyr Shevchenko, Director of the Oncology Center, PhD (Medicine), surgical oncologist, and Iryna Kupriienko, Chief State Sanitary Doctor of Sumy Region.
🩺 Key points:
- Sumy Region has one of the highest incidence rates of malignant neoplasms in the country: 373 cases per 100,000 population (the national average is 340).
- The slight decrease in the number of diagnosed cases is not due to better health indicators but to population migration caused by the difficult security situation.
Volodymyr Shevchenko emphasized the high standards of diagnosis and treatment introduced at the center:
- Early diagnosis using advanced equipment.
- Innovative surgical methods, including minimally invasive procedures.
- Precise radiation therapy that minimizes the impact on healthy tissue.
- Chemotherapy and immunotherapy tailored to the individual characteristics of each patient.
Iryna Kupriienko focused on the importance of preventive measures, in particular vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV). She stressed that this virus is the main cause of cervical cancer, and vaccination in adolescence is the most effective way to prevent the disease.
