At the Sumy Regional Clinical Oncology Center, we emphasize: cervical cancer prevention is your step toward a healthy future. About 7,500 new cases of this disease are diagnosed in Ukraine every year, but modern screening and vaccination make it possible to prevent the disease or detect it at an early stage, when treatment is most effective.
What should you know about cervical cancer prevention?
1️⃣ Regular screening is your best ally
In its early stages, cervical cancer has no symptoms, so a regular cytology test (Pap test) helps detect precancerous changes in time. We recommend having a Pap test every three years starting at age 21.
If you have concerns or risk factors, your doctor may recommend additional tests such as colposcopy or an HPV test.
2️⃣ Vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV)
Human papillomavirus is the main cause of cervical cancer. Vaccination protects against the most dangerous strains, 16 and 18, which cause more than 70% of cases. We emphasize that vaccination is most effective before the start of sexual activity, but it is also possible to get vaccinated at an older age.
3️⃣ Regular gynecological checkups
Annual checkups with a gynecologist are an important part of caring for your health. At our center, you can get a professional consultation with a gynecologic oncologist and have all the necessary examinations.
