Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy is traditionally associated with cancer treatment. In some cases, this method is also effective for non-tumor conditions, especially when other methods (medication, physiotherapy or surgery) do not work or are contraindicated.

Radiation acts locally on the affected tissues, providing:

❇️ an anti-inflammatory effect,

❇️ pain relief,

❇️ reduced swelling,

❇️ antispasmodic and desensitizing action.

This makes it possible to avoid surgery or long-term medication, which is especially important for patients with complex or chronic conditions.

Radiation therapy is effective for the following non-tumor conditions:

❇️ Degenerative joint diseases (osteoarthritis, osteochondrosis, heel spurs);

❇️ Neuralgia and chronic pain (post-traumatic, postoperative, ganglionitis);

❇️ Skin conditions (keloid scars, chronic dermatoses);

❇️ Purulent inflammatory conditions (boils, hidradenitis, felon (panaritium));

❇️ Eye conditions (exophthalmos, chronic keratitis).

The method has its limitations. Radiation therapy is not used if:

🔴 the patient’s general condition is too severe;

🔴 there are decompensated diseases of vital organs;

🔴 there is a history of radiation sickness;

🔴 there is active tuberculosis or a severe mental disorder.

The doctor always weighs the benefits and risks before prescribing treatment.

The Sumy Regional Clinical Oncology Center has two radiation therapy departments, which makes it possible to choose the best method for each patient individually. In particular, radiation therapy department No. 2 uses:

✅ Varian Halcyon — a modern linear accelerator for external beam therapy

✅ AGAT-RM, AGAT-S — gamma therapy units

✅ RENTGEN-TA — for short-distance X-ray therapy

Radiation therapy is a precise, safe and evidence-based method that can significantly improve patients’ quality of life even when other treatments have proven ineffective or impossible.
