A joint briefing on the importance of cancer prevention was held at the Sumy Regional Clinical Oncology Center.
In Sumy Region, 41,000 patients are on the cancer register. The most common cancers are breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men.
“In 2023, 398 cancer cases per 100,000 population were detected,” said the center’s director Volodymyr Shevchenko.
In total, 1,530 patients died of cancer in 2023. More than 13,000 patients received inpatient treatment. Almost 4,000 surgical procedures and more than 4,000 radiation therapy procedures were performed.
Prevention is our priority. “Cancer screening tests are included in the Program of Medical Guarantees,” stressed Halyna Khometa, deputy head of the Health Care Department.
“After the age of 40–45, cancer incidence rises sharply, so it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle and give up alcohol and smoking,” he added.
