What is melanoma? Melanoma is a malignant tumor that develops from melanocytes (pigment cells that produce melanin). The tumor is most often found in the skin, much less often in the retina or on mucous membranes (the oral and nasal cavities, the perianal and vulvovaginal areas), etc.

Melanoma spreads through the lymph and blood to almost all organs. Melanoma metastases usually appear within the first year after the disease begins. Metastases first spread to the lymph nodes, and later to the lungs, liver, bones and brain.

According to the WHO, about 48,000 melanoma-related deaths are registered worldwide every year.

Who is at risk of melanoma? Risk factors:

  • fair skin, light (blue) eyes, light hair and pink freckles;
  • a history of sunburn (even burns you got in childhood, adolescence or youth can play a fatal role in the development of a tumor in later years);
  • excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation, even artificial radiation in a tanning bed;
  • if you or your relatives have had melanoma (a personal or family history of melanoma);
  • nevi (moles; 70% are congenital and 30% acquired); having more than 50 nevi on the skin increases the risk of melanoma;
  • injury to nevi and changes in their appearance;
  • age over 50;
  • male sex.

The risk of melanoma is also linked to skin phototype.
