Minister of Health of Ukraine Viktor Liashko visited Sumy

“You have taken step one; we are ready to take step two”: Viktor Liashko on the new equipment at the Sumy Regional Clinical Oncology Center
Minister of Health Viktor Liashko was pleasantly impressed that in the Sumy Region, on the initiative of Regional Council Chairman Viktor Fedorchenko and thanks to cooperation between the authorities, members of parliament, the Oncology Center itself, businesses and the agricultural sector, the facility had been reconstructed and a linear accelerator purchased within a year and a half.
“This is the result of joint work, and not every region has this kind of cooperation. One of the most important results of this work is the purchase of a modern linear accelerator. With this equipment, doctors will now be able to deliver and control tumor irradiation with much greater precision while keeping the impact on surrounding healthy tissue to a minimum,” the minister noted.
He toured the premises, the CT scanner and the linear accelerator, talked with the hospital’s management and staff, and thanked the medical workers and leaders of the Sumy Region for their work.
“Together we built this department and purchased modern equipment. We have proved that we share one goal: to do everything to save the lives of the region’s residents. My wish is that as few people as possible end up in this hospital, that they do not get sick. But if a person does end up here, we must give them the right to life. We set this goal, and we achieved it,” emphasized Regional Council Chairman Viktor Fedorchenko.
Together with the head of the military administration, Dmytro Zhyvytskyi, he told the minister about plans for the future: another linear accelerator and the construction of a five-story treatment building. “We have now submitted the design for the new building to the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development for funding from the European Investment Bank. I hope it will be approved and we will start construction soon,” said Dmytro Zhyvytskyi.
Regarding the need for another accelerator, the minister said: “When we see not only a desire to do something, but real steps to develop healthcare facilities, we are ready to help. You have taken step one by purchasing a CT scanner and a linear accelerator, plus you have done renovations. We will take step two: we will help purchase another linear accelerator and will do everything we can to support the development of the center.”
