Around the world, May is observed as Melanoma Awareness Month. Melanoma is one of the most dangerous forms of skin cancer. Every year, the second Monday of May also marks World Melanoma Day, an international initiative that highlights the growing prevalence of this disease and reminds people to protect their skin from excessive ultraviolet radiation.
Melanoma is such a dangerous type of cancer because it can metastasize quickly, spreading through the blood and lymph to almost all internal organs. According to the WHO, melanoma causes about 48,000 deaths worldwide every year. In Ukraine, about 30,000 people currently live with this diagnosis, and their number grows by 3–7% every year. That is why drawing attention to melanoma and raising awareness of its prevention and early detection are vital for protecting people’s health and lives.
The Sumy Regional Clinical Oncology Center is joining this educational initiative. Throughout May, we will share useful information about melanoma on our social media. In particular, we will cover:
🔹 Melanoma prevention — how to reduce the risk of this dangerous disease.
🔹 Early diagnosis — which signs can help you suspect melanoma in time and see a doctor.
🔹 Modern treatment methods — the latest approaches to melanoma therapy that improve the chances of recovery.
🔹 Skin self-checks — tips on regularly examining your moles and pigmented spots yourself.
