Scientific and practical conference

On 20 November 2025, the Sumy Regional Clinical Oncology Center hosted a scientific and practical conference, “The role of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) in determining the management strategy for patients with lung cancer.” The event brought together oncology specialists to discuss modern approaches to the multidisciplinary tumor board and its importance in treating patients with localized and metastatic lung cancer.

🔹 The place and role of the MDT in managing patients with lung cancer. Prospects for development in Ukraine.

Oleksandr Sukhoversha, Doctor of Medical Sciences, thoracic surgical oncologist at City Clinical Hospital No. 4 (Dnipro), presented international MDT guidelines, the Ukrainian experience and the challenges of introducing modern approaches. Global projects and practices for developing oncology MDTs, the NCCN, ERS and ESMO standards, and the prospects for digitizing MDT processes in Ukraine were also discussed.

🔹 The role of the thoracic surgeon in the MDT for patients with resectable lung cancer.

Ihor Vynnychenko, PhD (Medicine), thoracic surgical oncologist at the Oncology Center and Head of the Department of Oncology and Radiology at Sumy State University, focused on resectability criteria, modern surgical approaches and the importance of the surgeon’s involvement in multidisciplinary decision-making. The stages of managing patients with resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and the factors affecting prognosis were discussed.

🔹 The impact of the MDT on determining the management strategy for patients with metastatic lung cancer.

Olha Kravchenko, clinical oncologist at the Poltava Regional Oncology Dispensary, gave an overview of modern systemic approaches to treating metastatic lung cancer. The focus was on data from the FLAURA2 trial, the role of targeted therapy and combination regimens, and the importance of the MDT in choosing a personalized treatment strategy.

The multidisciplinary tumor board is a key tool for making individualized decisions for patients with lung cancer. The approaches discussed make it possible to:

👉 improve diagnostic accuracy;

👉 determine the optimal treatment strategy;

👉 improve patients’ prognosis and quality of life;

👉 ensure consistent clinical decisions based on evidence-based medicine.

The conference became an important platform for sharing experience, improving professional skills and strengthening collaboration between specialists in different fields.
