On 28 March, the Sumy Regional Clinical Oncology Center hosted the scientific and practical conference “Colorectal cancer: early diagnosis and treatment strategies,” dedicated to one of the most common cancers in Ukraine.
🔹 Special attention was paid to the role of family doctors, since they are most often the first to encounter symptoms that may indicate cancer. Early detection of the disease — and therefore the chances of successful treatment — depends on their vigilance, awareness and timely referral for examination.
The conference covered:
- modern approaches to the early diagnosis of colorectal cancer,
- current clinical treatment protocols,
- the role of radiation and combined therapy,
- working with patients who have a colostomy,
- interpretation of tumor markers,
as well as other equally important issues.
🧬 The event brought together not only oncologists and surgeons but also primary care doctors, which is vital for building an effective system of interdisciplinary cooperation. This is how a continuous patient pathway is formed — from initial detection to specialized treatment. Participants received guides for family doctors with practical recommendations on preparing patients for laboratory tests and screening. Current incidence and mortality statistics for Ukraine were reviewed, and the treatment protocols in force were presented.
