“This is the first time I have seen a team of local leaders and doctors, with the support of the state, accomplish such an important common cause in such a short time. The impressive progress we are seeing today is only possible when true professionals take on the job. Just a few months ago, renovation work was only beginning at the Oncology Center, and, to be honest, I had some doubts whether it would really be possible not only to ‘launch’ this serious reconstruction project but also to do everything to such a high standard. In addition, a linear accelerator has already been installed here, and a room is being prepared for a CT scanner. To say that I am pleasantly impressed is an understatement.” This is how Viktoriia Miliutina, director of the NHSU Northern Interregional Department, described her impressions of the reconstruction of the Oncology Center. She visited the facility today together with Viktor Fedorchenko, Chairman of Sumy Regional Council, and Mykyta Bania, a member of the Regional Council.

Viktor Fedorchenko and the head of the Oncology Center, Volodymyr Shevchenko, gave the NHSU representative a tour of the facility and showed her the scope of work already completed. Reconstruction of the administrative building is now in full swing. The former chemotherapy department is being completely transformed and will be fitted with modern medical equipment. Renovation continues on the first floor of the surgical department, where wards for chemotherapy patients will be temporarily located. Later, this department will move to a new building planned for construction on the grounds of the facility, and the urologic oncology department will remain here.

Viktoriia Miliutina was also shown the installed linear accelerator.

“We truly feel the support of both Minister of Health Viktor Liashko and the country’s leadership. If the NHSU also helps us implement our project, we will have the best oncology center in Ukraine,” Viktor Fedorchenko emphasized.

The Chairman of the Regional Council also noted that the important issue is not only the reconstruction of buildings and the purchase of expensive equipment but also the social side for medical workers: decent salaries, housing and so on.

“I can see that in this project everything is done for the patient, so that Sumy residents receive high-quality care. The economics have been calculated, and resources are used efficiently. And, by the way, this could become an additional source of income for Sumy Region, because under the new conditions of the healthcare reform a patient can choose any facility in the country. People from all over Ukraine will be able to come to this complex, which I can already see is modern,” Viktoriia Miliutina concluded.
