The Sumy Regional Clinical Oncology Center has successfully performed a video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy (VATS lobectomy), a modern minimally invasive method of surgical treatment for lung disease.
Surgical team:
Surgeon: Oleksandr Vynnychenko, thoracic surgical oncologist at the Oncology Center
Assistant: Ruslana Moskalenko
Anesthesiologist: Vasyl Nikolaienko
Operating room nurse: Olena Khomusiak
What is a VATS lobectomy?
A VATS lobectomy is a procedure in which the surgeon removes the affected lobe of the lung through small incisions in the chest, using a video camera and special instruments. This approach avoids the large incisions and rib spreading typical of traditional open surgery.
Advantages of VATS lobectomy:
🔹 Less postoperative pain: smaller incisions mean less discomfort after surgery.
🔹 Faster recovery: patients return to their usual way of life sooner.
🔹 Shorter hospital stay: a shorter hospitalization than with traditional methods.
🔹 Minimal scarring: a good cosmetic result thanks to the small incisions.
Whether a VATS lobectomy is chosen depends on the size and location of the tumor and the patient’s general health. Our specialists carefully assess each case to determine the most suitable treatment method. Introducing such modern techniques into our practice makes treatment more effective and improves our patients’ quality of life.
Your health is our priority.
