As of today, the first patients have started treatment on the modern Varian Halcyon linear accelerator installed in the radiation therapy department of the Sumy Regional Clinical Oncology Center.
Everything that had been talked about so much in theory has now been seen in practice. The modern machine provides the most comfortable conditions for both the doctor and the patient.
The system has an exceptionally high throughput, as a session takes 15 minutes on average. And most importantly, it is precise. The accelerator acts only on the tumor without damaging healthy tissue.
Doctors are already saying that it would be good to purchase another machine like this, as people from neighboring regions are already coming to us for treatment. For patients, the treatment is free of charge, as it is included in the radiation therapy package of the National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU).
From now on, the Oncology Center can treat patients of any age with tumors at various sites.
The linear accelerator can be used to irradiate 95% of all tumor types. These include breast tumors, malignant tumors of the digestive organs, tumors of the pelvic organs and pancreas, brain tumors, malignant lesions of the prostate, lung cancer and ENT cancers.
