The clinical diagnostic laboratory is a structural unit of the Oncology Center.

The laboratory has an experienced team, performs general clinical, hematology, biochemistry, immunology and cytology tests, and takes part in the national quality control program. It is equipped with modern instruments, reagents, and core and methodological regulatory documents. Its equipment and experience ensure the highest quality standards.

The range of tests includes:

  • hematology (complete blood count, white blood cell differential, platelet count and myelograms);
  • coagulation parameters and coagulogram (aPTT, INR, D-dimer, fibrinogen, PT, etc.);
  • biochemistry tests (blood glucose, total protein, bilirubin and its fractions, creatinine, urea, ALT, AST, GGT, HDL and LDL, triglycerides, LDH, CK, total amylase, alkaline phosphatase, uric acid, cholesterol, Ca, Mg, P, electrolytes and blood gases, etc.);
  • general clinical tests (urinalysis; Nechiporenko urine test, Zimnitsky urine test)
  • tumor markers (human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), breast cancer marker CA 15-3, ovarian cancer markers CA-125 and HE4, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), pancreatic cancer marker CA 19-9, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)) and the inflammation marker C-reactive protein.
  • Immunology (blood group and Rh factor, isoimmune antibodies).

Cytology section of the clinical diagnostic laboratory

The main goal of its work is to detect precancerous conditions and early-stage cancer by examining, at the cellular level, biological material obtained from various organs and tissues.

It has 3 main areas of work:

  1. Diagnostic cytology tests of biological material to identify the morphology of the pathological process.
  2. Screening cytology tests during preventive checkups of women to detect precancerous and cancerous lesions of the cervix.
  3. Consultations.

The laboratory performs diagnostic cytology tests of the following types:

  • exfoliative cytology: washings, serous fluids, smears and imprints of mucous membranes obtained by aspiration or by taking imprint smears;
  • aspiration cytology: thin preparations on glass slides from material obtained by fine-needle aspiration biopsy;
  • endoscopic cytology: imprint smears obtained during the patient’s endoscopic examination, or imprint smears from a biopsy specimen taken for histology;
  • urgent intraoperative diagnosis to clarify the morphological diagnosis and adjust the extent of surgery: imprint smears taken directly from surgical material during the operation.

Screening cytology tests include examination of smears from the cervix and cervical canal obtained during preventive checkups of women in Sumy Region and the city of Sumy, as well as from private facilities, provided there is a referral.

The laboratory provides consultative support in difficult cases of cytological diagnosis to specialists from other laboratories in Sumy Region and the city of Sumy.

The staff of the cytology section have many years of experience and constantly improve their professional skills at advanced training courses, seminars, webinars and scientific and practical conferences.
